Experience the profound history and spiritual beauty of San Gregorio al Celio with an immersive audio-guided tour. Located near the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, this ancient church was founded by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century, originally as part of his family home and monastery. Rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 17th century, its impressive façade, designed by Giovanni Battista Soria, welcomes you into a serene space filled with artistic treasures.
Inside, you'll find 16 ancient columns dividing the nave, while the stunning Cosmatesque floor and vibrant frescoes, including Placido Costanzi's Glorification of St. Gregory and St. Romuald, add to the grandeur. The church also features works by renowned artists like Antonio Balestra and Pompeo Batoni. One highlight is the Salviati Chapel, home to an ancient fresco that, according to legend, spoke to St. Gregory.
In the garden, you can explore three historic oratories, including the Oratory of St. Andrew with frescoes by Domenichino and Guido Reni, and the Oratory of St. Silvia, dedicated to Gregory’s mother. The audio guide allows you to explore these remarkable spaces at your own pace, uncovering the deep spiritual and artistic significance of this historic sanctuary.
